Kane Brown Presented With Woman in Risque Dress Cma Awards
Rejoice, country music faithful. It's CMA season.
The Country Music Association rolled out a slew of nominees Wednesday for the genre's biggest night — a list led by mainstays Maren Morris, Brothers Osborne, Eric Church, Garth Brooks and show co-host Carrie Underwood.
Which nominees dropped jaws? Which were missed all together? Let's dig in with a look at 2019 snubs and surprises.
Snub: Kane Brown
In releasing "Experiment" in November, Kane Brown debuted at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart — making him one of three country artists to reach the top album charting pinnacle last year. The record proved a cornerstone for Brown, offering a home to two No. 1 singles: "Lose It" and "Good As You," the former earning RIAA platinum-selling status. Still, it wasn't enough for an Album of the Year nod. Brown also missed a Musical Event of the Year nomination for his Marshmello collaboration, "One Thing Right," which dropped days before the close of this year's eligibility period.

Surprise: Brooks & Dunn
It's been nearly a decade since the newest Country Music Hall of Fame inductees earned a CMA nomination and 13 years since last winning Vocal Duo of the Year. The field's changed a bit since 2006 — when Big & Rich gave the group a run for the award — but Brooks & Dunn's 2019 "Reboot" album should give the tenured outfit a run for the trophy.
Snub: Pistol Annies
Pistol Annies — the remarkable country music project from Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley — charmed critics and consumers alike with new album "Interstate Gospel," debuting No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and earning universal acclaim from tastemakers. Yet, in a year when the awards enlist a trio of legendary women to host, a standout release by three superb female songwriters gets overshadowed.

Surprise (and a snub?): 'Old Town Road'
Banishment from country radio can't stop this musical phenomenon from ridin' down the red carpet 'til it can't no more. "Old Town Road" earned a Musical Event of the Year nomination, which isn't unprecedented for a cross-genre collaboration — Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha earned a 2018 nomination for smash pop crossover "Meant To Be," and Snoop Dogg appeared on ballots for his Willie Nelson collaboration, "Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die." Still, given the record-shattering cultural phenomenon, should "Old Town Road" also be competing for Song of the Year?
Snub: Little Big Town's 'The Daughters'
The song that sent chills at this year's ACM Awards and created one of the standout moments from the CMA Music Festival in June misses a chance to be recognized at country music's marquee program.
Surprise: Zac Brown Band
Telling the haters to "f--k off" works in Zac Brown's favor. The "Chicken Fried" country rock outfit enters another bid for Vocal Group of the Year, where it's been a mainstay nominee for the last decade — earning eight nominations in the category since 2011. Unlike the others nominations, Brown and company enter 2019's bid after turning heads at the CMT Music Awards for an expletive-laced speech that railed against his "haters." The group hasn't brought home a CMA trophy since winning New Artist of the Year in 2010.

Snub: Luke Bryan
Luke Bryan is deservedly a perennial favorite in the Entertainer of the Year category, having notched nods annually since 2013. This year, despite the national visibility he brings to country music weekly on "American Idol" and his successful amphitheater tour, his name was glaringly absent from the category.
Surprise: Blake Shelton
A funny thing happens when an artist becomes famous on a grander scale than country music. Regardless of the quality of his/her songs, it becomes hard if not impossible to get recognized for their work. Shelton, a beloved coach on "The Voice," endured a four-year dry spell between CMA nominations before picking up three nods this year. His smash "God's Country" ended his drought with recognition for Single of the Year and Video of the Year. "God's Country," which Shelton didn't write, is also nominated for Song of the Year, but the category doesn't recognize the artist. In addition, Shelton picked up a collaboration nod with Garth Brooks for their single, "Dive Bar."
Now, if CMA voters were really being honest, Shelton would have had a Male Vocalist of the Year mention, as well.

Snub: Jimmie Allen
Allen appeared Wednesday alongside Ashley McBryde on "Good Morning America" to present the year's leading nominees. Considering the newcomer success he's seen with 2018's debut full-length "Mercury Lane," it would've made for a treat to see his name appear alongside New Artist of the Year nominee McBryde.
About the show
The 53rd CMA Awards show takes place Nov. 13 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
